Leave a Group

A member or admin voluntarily removes themselves from a group.

Who Can Do This

Any group member or admin. The group owner cannot leave regardless of the group's state — they must first transfer ownership. Regular members cannot access an archived group and therefore cannot leave while it is archived. Admins can leave an archived group. Any member or admin (except the owner) can leave a group that is frozen (owner lapsed). No one can leave a banned group — members cannot access the group details while it is banned and therefore have no path to leave until the ban is lifted.

Steps

  1. Open the group details page.
  2. Tap Leave Group.
  3. Confirm the action.

Rules

  • The owner cannot leave. Ownership must be transferred before leaving.
  • Leaving removes the user's membership record immediately.
  • Rides the user created within the group remain. They are not deleted when the user leaves. Because the group still exists, these rides stay as group rides and remain accessible to the remaining members.
  • For rides the user RSVPed to within this group: they retain access to public group rides they RSVPed to. For rides that are private to the group, they lose access and their RSVP is cancelled. A ride that was previously detached from the group is no longer a group ride; the user keeps any RSVP made before leaving. See Detach a Ride from a Group.
  • The owner and admins are not notified when a member voluntarily leaves. Leaving is self-directed, so no notification is sent.
  • If the leaving member is the target of a pending ownership transfer, that transfer request is automatically cancelled. The owner is notified.
  • If the user had a pending join request, leaving is not applicable — only full members can leave.
  • A user who leaves an active or archived group can rejoin later, subject to the group's current join approval settings.
  • A user cannot leave a banned group. The group details screen is inaccessible while the group is banned. Members regain access when the ban is lifted.
  • A user who leaves a frozen (owner lapsed) group cannot rejoin until the group returns to active, since a read-only group accepts no new members. See Frozen (owner lapsed).

What Happens Next

The user is removed from the group immediately and loses access to the group's details and rides. They are returned to the discovery screen. If the group is public, it reappears in their discovery results, since discovery hides only groups they currently belong to. The owner and admins are not notified that the member has left.

Failure Cases

  • User is the owner: The leave option is not shown to the owner. They must transfer ownership first.
  • Owner with no admins: If the owner has no admins, they cannot transfer ownership and therefore cannot leave. To exit, the owner can either promote an existing member to admin and then transfer ownership, or delete the group if they want to exit immediately.

Status: partially-live. Backend API is complete. The groups module has not yet been built in the frontend.
