Manage Admins
The group owner promotes members to admin or demotes admins back to member.
Who Can Do This
The group owner only. Admins cannot add or remove other admins.
A lapsed owner whose group is in the freeze window (up to day 30) retains this action so they can appoint an eligible admin for transfer without being required to re-subscribe.
Steps
To promote a member to admin:
- Go to the group member list.
- Select a member.
- Tap Promote to Admin.
To demote an admin to member:
- Go to the group member list.
- Select an admin.
- Tap Remove Admin Role.
Rules
- Only the owner can promote or demote admins.
- Only a subscriber member can be promoted to admin. Admin is a subscriber-only role. A free member cannot be promoted; the Promote to Admin option is unavailable for them with an explanation.
- An admin can be demoted to member at any time by the owner.
- There is no limit on the number of admins a group can have.
- When an admin's subscription lapses, they are demoted to a regular member automatically. The owner and the demoted user are both notified. Re-subscribing does not restore the role — the owner must re-promote them. See access policy.
- The owner cannot demote themselves — ownership and the admin role are distinct. To leave the group, the owner must first transfer ownership.
- Demoting an admin who is the target of a pending ownership transfer automatically cancels that transfer. The owner is notified and must restart the process with a different admin. See Transfer Ownership.
What Happens Next
The member's role is updated immediately. The affected user is notified of the role change. Admins gain the ability to access the group settings screen and update settings the owner has permitted (name and description if allowed), approve requests, and remove members. Demoted admins revert to regular member status.
Failure Cases
- User is not a member: A user must be a member of the group before they can be promoted to admin.
- Member is not a subscriber: A free member cannot be promoted to admin. The Promote to Admin option is unavailable with an explanation that admin is a subscriber-only role.
Status: partially-live. Backend API (update member role endpoint) is complete. The groups module has not yet been built in the frontend.
