Manage Admins

The ride creator promotes participants to admin or demotes admins back to member.

Who Can Do This

  • Creator only.

Steps

  1. Open the ride's participant list.
  2. Select a participant with yes or maybe status.
  3. Change their role from member to admin, or from admin back to member.

Rules

  • Only yes or maybe participants can be promoted to admin. An admin who changes their RSVP to no retains the admin role and all admin powers (RSVP approval, editing, participant management) — they only lose navigation and intercom access until they change back to yes or maybe.
  • Admin is a subscriber-only role. Only a subscriber participant can be promoted. A free participant cannot be made an admin.
  • When an admin's subscription lapses, they are demoted to a regular participant automatically and receive the standard Admin role changed notification. Re-subscribing does not restore the role — the creator must re-promote them. See Access Policy.
  • There is no limit on the number of admins — all eligible participants can be admins simultaneously.
  • Admins can: approve/reject RSVPs, edit the ride, and view the participant list. Pending RSVP approvals are linked to the ride, not to a specific admin — if an admin is demoted while reviewing requests, the creator or any remaining admin can continue the approval queue without interruption.
  • Admins cannot: delete the ride or manage other admins.
  • The creator cannot demote themselves via this flow — use Transfer Ownership to change who the creator is.
  • A creator whose subscription has lapsed retains the ability to promote and demote admins. Ride ownership is not subscriber-gated.
  • If no participant on the ride is a subscriber, the creator manages the ride alone with no admins. There is no platform fallback for this situation.

Group Ride: Group Owner as Auto-Admin

On a group ride, the group owner is automatically granted admin status regardless of whether the ride creator promotes them. The ride creator can demote the group owner to a regular participant or remove them entirely — the group owner has no special removal protection on the ride itself. However, demotion or removal does not affect the group owner's ability to Detach the Ride from the Group — that power belongs to the group owner role and cannot be taken away by the ride creator.

Group admins do not receive automatic ride admin status. Only the group owner is auto-promoted. Group admins participate as regular members on group rides unless the ride creator manually promotes them to ride admin.

What Happens Next

The participant's role is updated immediately. New admins gain approval and editing privileges; demoted members lose them.

Failure Cases

  • Participant not eligible: the selected user does not have yes or maybe status.
  • Participant is not a subscriber: a free participant cannot be promoted to admin. The promote option is unavailable with an explanation that admin is a subscriber-only role.
  • Not the creator: only the creator can change roles.

Status: partially-live. Backend API (add admin, remove admin endpoints) is complete. Frontend role management UI is not yet built.
