Intercom

Riders on an active navigation session can join a live voice channel for the ride, broadcasting audio to all other participants in the channel.

Intercom is a sub-feature of Navigation. A rider must have an active navigation session before they can join the intercom.

Who Can Do This

Any participant with an active navigation session (i.e. yes status and has tapped Start Ride).

Intercom is a Premium-only feature. Essential-tier riders (free users with no quota remaining) see the intercom button but it is disabled with a paid-feature indicator. They cannot send or receive audio.

See Access Policy for how ride tier is determined at Start.

Steps

  1. Start the ride (see Start a Ride).
  2. Tap the Intercom button on the navigation screen to join the channel.
  3. Audio is broadcast to all participants currently in the channel.
  4. Tap the Intercom button again to leave the channel.

Rules

  • Each ride has exactly one intercom channel. All participants who join share the same channel — no sub-groups.
  • Intercom is always-on (broadcast mode) once joined. There is no push-to-talk.
  • A rider can mute and unmute themselves at any time using the in-app mute button on the navigation screen or via a connected Bluetooth device.
  • Creators and admins can mute individual participants. This behaves identically to the participant pressing mute themselves — the participant's microphone is silenced and they can unmute at any time. The muted participant is not sent a push or in-app notification; they receive a ride sound notification instead. See Sound Notifications. The mute state does not persist if the participant leaves and rejoins the intercom channel. This action is intended only for safety — use it sparingly to avoid distraction while riding.
  • Leaving the intercom (tapping the button again) does not end the navigation session. The rider continues navigating.
  • Ending the ride (tapping End Ride) automatically leaves the intercom.
  • When the ride's end time passes, all active intercom sessions end automatically along with navigation.
  • Only one device per account can be in the intercom channel at a time — this follows the same single-session rule as navigation.

What Happens Next

The rider's voice is broadcast to all other participants currently in the channel. They hear other participants in return.

Failure Cases

  • No active navigation session: a rider must start the ride before joining intercom.
  • Essential tier: the intercom button is visible but disabled. The rider must subscribe to use it.
  • Ride ended: intercom cannot be joined after the ride's end time has passed.

Planned — not yet live: Intercom is not yet implemented.
